Placements & Overrides

Zones (AXO-managed)

A Zone is a named DOM slot on your site – e.g., hero_banner or product_recommendations. Zones are authored with the Chrome Extension. The AI engine decides which variant to show each visitor based on their segment and the active Brief.

Overrides (Marketer-forced)

An Override pins a specific variant to a specific segment, bypassing AI optimization entirely. Use this for legal requirements, brand compliance, or time-sensitive promotions that must run exactly as written – no exceptions.

When to use Overrides

You should rarely need Overrides. By default, AXO manages all placements autonomously based on your Campaign Briefs. Use an Override only when you need strict compliance, a regulatory-required disclosure, or absolute control over a specific audience.

To create a Manual Override: navigate to Content → Placements & Overrides, select the target Placement, and click + Add Override. Assign a target Segment, enter the exact content, and set a numeric priority. The tag engine always executes the highest-priority Override a visitor qualifies for, explicitly circumventing the baseline AI engine.

  • Overrides stack – a visitor can match multiple Overrides; only the highest-priority fires.
  • Setting priority to 0 disables an Override without deleting it.
  • Overrides are excluded from Lift measurement – holdout sampling does not apply.
